At the market prices through August 22, six of the top twenty cross-game break-aways are Magic cards. They come from five different sets: Commander Legends (2020), Kaldheim (2021), Ravnica Allegiance (2019), Duskmourn (2024) and Foundations Jumpstart (2024). None of those five sets did anything unusual: each one's own index moved between +1.5% and +4.3% over the same window. The cards did not stay with them.

The Nazgûl break-away was one card name detaching from one set nine times. This is the inverse: one event reaching into five sets at once and pulling out one card from each.
The why, on the record
The event is The Hobbit crossover set, which launched in mid-August 2026, and this wave is documented while it is happening.
Draftsim's weekly price-spike column for August 7 to 14 attributes the week's movers to the new set directly: Magda, Brazen Outlaw to her inclusion in decks built around the new commanders Thorin, King of Durin's Folk and Smaug the Magnificent; Blazing Sunsteel to its synergy with Smaug the Impenetrable; Prime Speaker Vannifar to demand from Thranduil, the Elvenking alongside a second, unrelated commander from Mystery Booster. MTG Rocks measured Blazing Sunsteel at a 226% raw price rise on August 13, noting the card already sits in 47% of Smaug decks, and tracked Magda's rise separately, as did MTGStocks' Weekly Winners. Tyvar, the Pummeler's coverage splits its attribution in two: Thranduil synergy in Commander, plus a Modern combo deck, so its row carries more than one driver.
Two honesty notes on the citations. The percentages above are ours, not theirs: coverage reports a card's raw price change, while our number is the card's move after subtracting its own set's move over the window, so the two are close but not the same quantity. And Dionus, Elvish Archdruid had no dedicated coverage we could find at the time of writing. It is an elf lord in a wave that includes elf demand, which makes the new set the standing candidate, but we do not attribute what we cannot source.
What the structure adds
The coverage tells you which cards went up. The separation tells you something the price alone does not: none of this is set tide. Commander Legends, Kaldheim, Ravnica Allegiance, Duskmourn and Foundations Jumpstart all stayed within a few percent of flat while one card in each detached by triple digits. Demand attached to names and synergies, reaching backward through seven years of printings, and the digest surfaces that shape without knowing anything about dwarves: five near-flat sets, six detachments, one week.
What to watch
Release waves have a documented settling pattern: the market prices the new synergy fast, then the excursions either hold as decks actually get built or retrace as speculative copies come back to market. A break-away tells you a card detached from its set's shared move. It does not tell you direction from here. We measure structure, not direction.
