In the 30 days ending July 20, eleven squirrel printings each broke away from their own set. The sets themselves barely moved: all seven products involved stayed inside single digits, most under 7%. The cards did not.

Why the breadth is the story
One card breaking away from its set is a card story: a deck result, a buyout, a stale listing clearing. Eleven printings of the same creature type breaking away across seven different products at once, while each of those products stays flat, is something else. The demand is aimed at a theme, not at a set.
A raw price list shows eleven separate spikes. Separating each card's move from its own set's shared move shows one event.
Toski makes the cleanest example. The same card broke away in three different products: the Kaldheim original (+115%), and both 2024 Commander precon reprints (+157% in Murders at Karlov Manor, +97% in Bloomburrow). Those reprints are what pushed Toski's price down in 2024. Every printing recovering together, each against a flat set, reads as demand for the card itself rather than for any product that contains it.
The why, on the record
The cause is documented. In early June 2026, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl was revealed as a legend in Magic's Marvel Super Heroes set. Wargamer reported on July 6 that Toski went from about $3 to over $6 as Squirrel Girl approached 4,000 decks on EDHREC. MTG Rocks reported on June 14 that Scurry of Squirrels jumped 294% from $0.31, with 1,266 near-mint copies sold in the three days after the reveal.
Our record adds the shape of the wave. Chatterfang, Squirrel General printings were already breaking away in May: +112% at the May 11 close in Commander: Bloomburrow and +105% at May 25 in Modern Horizons 2, before the reveal date the coverage names. Chatterfang sees Modern play, which is a candidate explanation for the early move, and we do not attribute what we cannot measure. What the data does show: the tribe-wide breadth, ten more printings across seven products, arrived in the window after the reveal.
What to watch
Whether the breadth holds. A theme-driven wave can settle two ways: the tribe keeps its new level as decks actually get built, or the excursions retrace as speculative copies come back to market. Reprint exposure differs by card, and coverage of the spike itself notes that betting on no reprint is always risky.
